OK... Its a personal gripe of mine and a soapbox issue but.. MODS.. Im writing it here coz I have made issues for myself in the past but I could write this is any game thread
They are appearing all over the place because the game developers are either too occupied on how to make the next dollar out of DLC they will over charge us for, or they are just too scared to get licenses for something that might make the product look bad, and get sued.
So comes the modder who for the most part doesnt care who's design he ripping off or how close to the real thing it actually is, for the most part its their interpretation of the thing.
With all the mods floating around what we end up with is:
In my personal experience in Arma2:
I had a mod set with guns and units from different sources, not always up to date because once you have a few its a full time job keeping up with the damn things, once you do update, the missions you wrote no longer work because the classnames have been changed from eg. BluFor to Blufor or worse. So you dont update which means.. you have missions that no-one other than yourself can play what you have made. (Boring)
What, I could share my mod collection so others can play... Yes I could. Thats coming to around 1.4gig without the addon maps.. when the lovely map makers update they often move the map slightly.. doesnt sound bad until you realize. My carefully crafted hand placed items that actually make the mission are no longer where I put them, that truck no longer drives down the road to the junction coz the road and junction has moved. etc etc
1.4gig... Im on ADSL, I cannot get anything else I live 300m from the local exchange building which is fiber-optic enabled but the optical cable goes the wrong way outta the exchange :-( .. So my upload out of my pc is around 0.8Mbps.. When I upload anything it basically kills any browsing/gaming I wanna do for the duration... For those that dont know, browsing requires upload bandwidth as well as download... It would literally take a couple of days of nonstop upload.
Then we have racing sims.. All moddable.. OK it doesnt rely on missions that have been made but anyone who has played with modded content at some point has come across the dreaded mismatch error, especially if you dont just limit yourself to just one game server. and 2 versions of the same track always fight, so you have to have that same version and only that version in your locations/tracks folder.... meh... Ive had it with MODS...
Now I play standard or not at all.
Climbs off the soapbox and breathes deeply.
